Russell clings on to win dramatic Chinese GP sprint race
Russell takes first F1 sprint win at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix.

George Russell took the first F1 sprint race victory of his career after delivering a battling performance at the Chinese Grand Prix.
Russell maintained his 100% start to the season, but the Mercedes driver was forced to work for his Saturday success in China, with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton providing a threat throughout.
Kimi Antonelli suffered a dreadful launch and was swamped into the first corner, dropping to seventh place in the opening exchanges. But things got even worse for the Italian, who then made contact with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar at Turn 7, with Antonelli handed a 10-second penalty for his troubles.
Conversely, it was a great start for Hamilton in the Ferrari, who surged from fourth to the lead. Losing out to pole-sitter Russell on the drag to the Turn 14 hairpin, he then fought back at the start of the second lap, with the ding-dong battle keeping Leclerc within touching distance of the lead.
With a further three changes by the first corner of lap six, Russell found himself in the lead and was crucially able to escape by one second, robbing Hamilton of overtake mode.
Struggling with his tyres, Hamilton then lost out to team-mate Leclerc on lap eight. Unwilling to yield without a fight, Hamilton attempted to fight back on lap nine, but it was to no avail, with Antonelli then closing onto the duelling Ferraris.
Come lap 11, Leclerc managed to get clear of Hamilton, with the Briton losing out to Antonelli into Turn 11. Given Antonelli's penalty, the state of his tyres, and the limited laps remaining, Hamilton did not defend massively.
F1 retirements spark excitement
In quick succession, Arvid Lindblad, Valtteri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg all retired, with the former two drivers returning to the garage, while the latter stopped his Audi on the track.
With the medium tyres suffering from heavy degradation, the majority of the field, including all of the front-runners, reacted quickly to pull into the pits for fresh, soft rubber.
In the mayhem, Antonelli served his penalty but dropped to seventh place as a result, leaving him with minimal time to recover.
Restarting with three laps remaining, Leclerc was caught out by wheelspin as Russell got back up to speed, allowing the Mercedes driver to scamper clear.
The restart also provided difficulties for McLaren as Oscar Piastri found himself in hot water for passing Antonelli before crossing the timing line. Instructed to hand the position back swiftly, the Australian was able to avoid a penalty.
At the front, Russell was able to cling on to record his first sprint race victory, with Leclerc closing to provide a late threat for the victory. Hamilton was third, with Norris, Antonelli and Piastri rounding out the top six.
Having not stopped under the safety car, Liam Lawson and Ollie Bearman scored points, with Max Verstappen missing out following a poor start.
