Andrea Kimi Antonelli wins the Japanese Grand Prix

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix from pole position.
The 19-year-old made history as just the second teenager in F1 to win a grand prix last time out in China, while also ending a 20-year wait for another Italian to score a race victory.
He has now followed that up with a dominant victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, converting a second pole position into a second win of the season.
He now leads the championship for the first time and becomes the youngest driver every to do so.
Antonelli did not get a good start, dropping to sixth off the line, but benefited from a safety car for an Ollie Bearman crash to steal a free pitstop.
Coming into the pits in the lead, Antonelli emerged in the same position, heading Oscar Piastri, who led at the start of the race.
When the race restarted, Antonelli eased into the distance to continue Mercedes’ clean sweep in 2026 across the first three rounds.
Piastri, in his first grand prix start of the season, was second for McLaren and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc fended off the Mercedes of George Russell for third.
Lando Norris was fifth in the sister McLaren, while Lewis Hamilton was sixth after being an early podium factor in his Ferrari.
Max Verstappen made limited progress from 11th on the grid, getting to eighth and being denied by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in a battle for seventh.
Lance Stroll failed to finish due to a technical issue, while Bearman was the only other retirement after his crash.
