The F1 championship standings after the 2026 Australian Grand Prix
George Russell and Mercedes have taken an early lead in the 2026 Formula 1 world championship standings, following victory at the Australian Grand Prix.
The Silver Arrows started the campaign as favourite and delivered on that promise in Melbourne, with George Russell leading a team 1-2 in qualifying before prevailing in an early fight with Ferrari in the 58-lap grand prix.
Russell took the chequered flag almost three seconds clear of team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Ferrari ended up third with Charles Leclerc, who led home team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris was fifth for McLaren, almost a minute behind the leader, as the Briton resisted pressure from a charging Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.
Verstappen came from 20th on the grid to finish sixth following a crash in qualifying.
Ollier Bearman gave Haas points in seventh ahead of rookie Arvid Lindblad in the Racing Bulls, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Alpine's Pierre Gasly.
Oscar Piastri didn't make the start after a crash on the sighting lap, while neither Cadillac, Aston Martin, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg saw the chequered flag.
