George Russell headed a Mercedes 1-2 in Formula 1 2026’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix after a questionable strategy call from Ferrari.

The 28-year-old Briton got his world championship aspirations off to the perfect start by leading home team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli as Mercedes laid down an early marker at the start of F1's new era.

Ferrari ran Mercedes close early on but appeared to squander any chance of victory by choosing not to pit either of its cars during an early virtual safety car period.

Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third, 12.5 seconds behind the Mercedes pair, as he narrowly denied team-mate Lewis Hamilton a first Ferrari podium.

Russell and Leclerc exchanged the lead no fewer than six times in a pulsating opening 10 laps, as F1’s much-criticised new regulations started with a bang.

Ferrari appeared to have the early advantage in the race after Leclerc stormed from fourth to first by Turn 1 with a lighting-fast start, but the Italian team’s decision not to follow Mercedes in pitting during a virtual safety car proved costly.

Ferrari instead chose to favour track position as both Mercedes cars pitted after Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull conked out on lap 11, with Leclerc and Hamilton staying out.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton questioned Ferrari's decision as it elected against stopping, and also missed the opportunity to do so during a second virtual safety car period a short while after after the pit lane was closed due to Valtteri Bottas stopping at the entry.

Ferrari effectively threw away control of the grand prix, as well as 10 seconds of lap time, to Mercedes by servicing its cars when track conditions were green.

That ultimately killed any hope of Ferrari challenging for the win as the race petered out in the second half, leaving Russell to take an unchallenged victory ahead of Antonelli, who impressively recovered from dropping as low as seventh with a poor getaway.

The result sees Russell, who entered the 2026 season as the favourite for the world title, move into the lead of the F1 world championship for the first time in his career.

World champion Lando Norris finished a distant fifth for McLaren, the best part of a minute behind Russell, while Max Verstappen turned in a superb comeback drive from 20th on the grid to claim sixth.

Ollie Bearman took a brilliant seventh for Haas, ahead of rookie Arvid Lindblad, who scored points on an impressive F1 debut for Racing Bulls in eighth.

Gabriel Bortoleto and Pierre Gasly scored the final points on offer in ninth and 10th for Audi and Alpine respectively.

Five cars fail to finish, heartbreak for Piastri

A total of five cars either failed to take the start, or failed to complete the entire race distance in Melbourne.

Hadjar retired on Lap 11 after his Red Bull pulled over at the side of the track with smoke pouring out the back of it, resulting in the first virtual safety car.

Bottas caused a second virtual safety car period on lap 18 when his Cadillac broke down at the entry to the pit lane.

Fernando Alonso enjoyed an incredible start to run as high as 10th in the opening stages but pitted on lap 15 so Aston Martin could make adjustments to his car.

After a lengthy spell in the pits, Alonso rejoined the race several laps down before returning to the garage to retire on lap 37.

Unlike Alonso, team-mate Lance Stroll did manage to reach the chequered flag, albeit 15 laps down in 17th after a lengthy visit to the garage on lap 35 amid Aston Martin's troubled start to 2026.

There was home heartbreak for Oscar Piastri for the second year running, who failed to take part in F1 2026’s season-opener after crashing his McLaren on his way to the grid.

Like Piastri, Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg didn’t take the start after his Audi experienced technical troubles before the race.
