Michael Schumacher’s journey from Formula 3 to Formula 1 will be brought to a new generation in a new short film, The Kaiser.

There are certain names that transcend F1 in F1 history. Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton, and, most certainly, Schumacher. With the legendary German’s final victory now 20 years in the rear view mirror, a fact that seems scarcely believable, Grey Universe has decided that now is the time to put his story on the big screen.

The short film of around 20 minutes in duration, which will be used as a proof of concept for a larger film based around the seven-time world champion, is directed by long-time F1 fan, Lubo Marinov.

The Bulgarian has relatively few credits to his name but says: “The more I read and watched, the more curious I became about his beginnings — before Ferrari, before the world titles. I wanted to know what made him stand out the moment he first stepped into an F1 car. I was especially intrigued by how new drivers today struggle to adapt, while Schumacher, even on his debut, seemed different. I had to find out why. That research didn't just lead to answers — it sparked this entire film.

“This project isn't about glorifying a champion — it's about the moment right before the legend was born. A split-second in history where one race could change everything… or nothing. It's a story of raw talent and of fragile self-belief. Even when you're the best at something, a single detail — a corner taken too fast, a false rumour, a missed opportunity — can make you question everything. But it's also about the people who see you clearly, even when you lose sight of yourself.”

The trailer heavily features the iconic Jordan 191 in which Schumacher made his eye-catching F1 debut, while he is later seen in his yellow Benetton race suit.

The onboard shots appear to use similar filming techniques to those used in the recent Senna TV series, with screens positioned behind the car to allow for the illusion of movement. In the limited views shown in the trailer, and allowing for a slight suspension of disbelief, this doesn’t look too bad.

Jivko Sirakov, plays the lead role, with a close enough resemblance to Schumacher, although, as is the case for most vocal performances in the trailer, the accent is a barrier to true engagement, with his Bulgarian tones difficult to mask.

On the topic of accents, the less said about Dimiter D. Marinov’s attempt at Eddie Jordan’s Irish accent, the better.

The film will be released in Autumn this year, and the full trailer can be viewed here.
