Russell takes dominant pole for F1 2026 opener after Verstappen crash
George Russell kicks off 2026 F1 season with pole position at the Australian Grand Prix.

Mercedes’ George Russell underlined his early championship favourite tag by claiming a dominant pole position at F1’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Russell was in a league of his own as Mercedes laid down a marker to the rest of the F1 field by securing an impressive front-row lockout in Melbourne.
The 28-year-old Briton set a 1m18.518s to lap 0.293 seconds faster than Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who recovered well from a huge crash in final practice which threatened to rule him out of qualifying altogether.

But there are question marks over Antonelli, who faces a stewards investigation for leaving the garage in an unsafe condition after Mercedes inadvertently left coolers on his car when it left the garage, before they fell onto the track.
Isack Hadjar sealed third place on the grid for Red Bull but was a whopping eight tenths adrift of Russell’s pole time, while team-mate Max Verstappen crashed out in the first part of qualifying, leaving him down in 20th.
Charles Leclerc was fourth-fastest for Ferrari, ahead of the McLaren pair headed by home hero Oscar Piastri. Reigning world champion Lando Norris was fifth after suffering damage to his McLaren when he ran over the debris from Antonelli’s car.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was seventh ahead of the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.
Completing the top-10 was Gabriel Bortoleto, who failed to take part in Q3 after his Audi conked out at the entry to the pitlane before the session began. Nico Hulkenberg was pipped to a spot in Q3 by his Audi team-mate and had to settle with 11th.
The Haas pair of Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon were separated by two tenths as they came in 12th and 13th, ahead of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon’s Williams and the second Alpine of Franco Colapinto, all of whom were dumped out in Q2 along with Hulkenberg.
Both Astons exit Q1 as Verstappen crashes

Fernando Alonso exited in the first part of qualifying in his troubled Aston Martin-Honda with a time good enough only for 17th, ahead of the Cadillac duo of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas who took 18th and 19th.
In a huge shock nobody saw coming, Verstappen will start down in 20th after suffering a surprise Q1 elimination with a crash on his first timed lap of qualifying.
Verstappen was sent spinning into the barriers after the rear of his Red Bull suddenly locked under braking at Turn 1.
“The car just f****** locked on the rear axles. Fantastic,” a frustrated Verstappen reported over team radio.
Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll will form the back row of the grid for the season opener after failing to emerge from the Williams and Aston Martin garages due to issues with their respective cars.
